VOLUNTEER
Mira is always on the look out for volunteers with an open heart, open mind, and open calendar. Whether you're a student, professional, or retiree, we welcome you on board. Email us at contact@mirascholars.org.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering! We value your time and energy, as you are a vital member of our team. The information below should help you to become familiar with Mira, so please take a look and let us know if you have any questions. We want to build a mutually beneficial relationship in which you, our valued volunteer, use your strengths, passions and dedication to not only benefit Mira, but to positively enhance your own life.

I love what Mira is doing. Can you help me with some volunteering ideas and steps on how to help?
- Email/Facebook friends and family
Sample email - Contact local press:
Reporters need help in finding credible and appealing stories. Sending an email to say, “My name is ______, and I'd like to tell you about an organization called Mira…" goes a long way. - Help with professional skills: marketing, & web, writing, etc.
Your talents and professional training may match perfectly with a project we're working on. - Speak with your community:
Are you connected to scouting, a religious group, small business association, women's circle, book club, or other local leadership role? Speaking among these groups is an authentic way to let others know about your volunteering good deeds and what Mira is all about. - Rally businesses and corporations:
Small businesses and corporations often enjoy donating to great causes. Who wouldn't? – feel good about giving – Share the joint publicity – Enjoy tax benefits - Start a campus chapter:
Most campuses require 3 students and a moderator to start a campus club. Simple as that… you and two great friends could take the lead in developing a culture of giving, leadership, and international awareness. - Volunteer at events:
We can always use your help setting up for events, checking in guests, assisting with auctions and dinners, providing guests with help, and cleaning up after everyone has gone home happy.
I'd like to Host a party for Mira - Do you have any tips?
Mini fundraisers can take shape in so many forms. Taking a lead in any of these makes a huge impact for Mira. Ideas for party options include:
Picnic, happy hour, brunch, communtiy walk, religious group gathering, trivia night, dinner/potluck, music performance, sporting event, children's face painting party, pool party, or anything you know your friends will enjoy
Remember, Before the Event:
- Let Mira know you're going to be hosting a fundraiser.
- Email your friends/family 4-8 weeks before your planned party.
- Let them know why you think a Mira fundraiser is important. List how they can help, and let them know the day/time/location of the event. Suggest a minimum donation of your choosing, $10-$50 tends not to scare people away.
- A few days before the event, follow-up with everyone.
- Prepare some talking points so you’re not at a loss for ideas. Mira can help you with this.
- Ask 1 or 2 friends to arrive early to help welcome your guests.
During the Event:
- Set a basket or box out for donations.
- Have a sign-in sheet for names and email addresses.
- Offer some food and beverages. Donors are happier on a full stomach
- Lead a roundtable of introductions if your guests don't know each other.
- Show Mira's promotional video.
- Let your guests know how you’ve been working with Mira, how every donation of time or money counts, and how you’d like them to join you in any way they’re comfortable with.
After the Event:
- Send your sign-in sheet and collected donations to Mira. If possible, let us know who is responsible for what amount so we can send them confirmation that their gift was received. Or, if you’re not sure, just rubberband everything and label it (First Name, Last Name, House Party, Date).
- Send a thank you email or note to everyone who came.
What's a non-profit?
A non-profit organization is like a typical business corporation, except that it re-invests all revenue back into self-preservation and expansion. A non-profit is designed for charity or service purposes. To obtain non-profit recognition, an organization must go through a government approved process called Incorporation. It’s not enough that people with a common purpose simply agree to act as a corporation. Mira was incorporated in 2009!
What are Mira's mission and vision?
Mission – Mira's mission is to provide educational opportunities to underserved and exploited children around the world by funding education-related projects.
Vision – Mira's vision is to empower children to reach their academic potential while inspiring the online community to reach its philanthropic potential.
How do we carry out our mission and vision?
We put our mission and vision into practice through our main tool: www.mirascholars.org. We use our website to connect organizations and donors to work together to enhance educational opportunities in developing countries. Bear in mind, Mira is not just a website; we are a dedicated organization working with other like-minded individuals and corporations to better the world.
Who can volunteer?
Anyone who is interested in international development can volunteer. Minors must show guardian's consent to Mira's Executive Director to volunteer.
Are there any requirements?
– All volunteers need to be tolerant, flexible and possess solid interpersonal skills.
– All volunteers must have an ability and willingness to interact with people of different cultures.
Is a volunteer an employee?
In a nutshell, a volunteer is not an employee. A volunteer is free to arrange his/her own schedule and does not report to a regular manager like in a normal office setting. A volunteer does not join an organization with the expectation of financial gain, but to better serve the global community.
What are my responsibilities?
When you sign up to volunteer, we'll talk about your everyday interests and professional background. From here, we will find a good fit on projects to work on and map out your specific responsibilities together. If you ever feel like a request is out of place, please let us know.
Sounds great! How do I register with Mira?
Very easy. Print out our Volunteer Registration Form by clicking HERE. Send a scanned copy with your information to contact@mirascholars.org or mail in the original.
